Department of Radiation Oncology Education

We train residents and medical students to deliver advanced radiation therapies and exceptional patient care.

At NYU Langone’s Department of Radiation Oncology, we are committed to training and mentoring future radiation oncologists, giving them the tools they need to provide outstanding care.

We offer residencies in radiation oncology and medical physics therapy, are a clinical training site for medical students, and also host medical students and fellows from other institutions. We foster an environment of learning and provide resources, including annual funding awards, that allow our trainees to lead clinical, translational, and laboratory research aimed at improving patient care.

The Department of Radiation Oncology is part of Perlmutter Cancer Center, 1 of only 3 National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in New York City and among the top 25 cancer centers in the country, according to the 2023–2024 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings. As a trainee, you learn in a multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of cancer care and translational research, and have the opportunity to work with leading experts in oncology. You also serve diverse patient populations across our hospital network, including at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, as well as NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

With access to the best facilities, residents and students receive training in delivering high-quality radiation therapy for adults and children, including a range of innovative radiation therapy techniques and technology. This includes the latest linear accelerators, such as Varian Medical Systems TrueBeam and Edge radiosurgery systems, and advanced radiation therapy techniques, such as Gamma Knife radiosurgery and intensity-modulated radiation therapy.

We have departmental staff for database management, grant management, and statistical analysis. Our department oversees the Xstrahl irradiator, which allows cancer researchers to perform radiation experiments and improve clinical practice. We also manage the metabolomics core facility, which supports researchers with mass spectroscopy–based techniques for analyzing metabolites and lipids.
